The festival will take place in various venues: Wits Theatre Complex, Braamfontein, Dance Factory, Market Theatre and the UJ Centre for the Arts in Auckland Park. Site specific works can also be expected!
The commissioned work for Dance Umbrella 2010 includes new works from Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe; Musa Hlatshwayo (Durban);Thabo Rapoo; Dada Masilo; Sello Pesa; (Johannesburg) and Sbonakaliso Ndaba (Cape Town). Other works that have been invited are Cold Case by Helanius J Wilkins (USA) and Black…White by Nelisiwe Xaba.
The rest of the festival will be packed full with the Stepping Stones programme which will host over one hundred groups on February 27 & 28 at the Wits Theatre; a Hip Hop Company at the Market Theatre on March 2, 3 & 4; a mixed bill of new works at the Wits Theatre on March 5 & 6 and again on March 6 & 7; a triple-bill programme featuring PK Sabbagha, Acty Tang (Grahamstown) and Sifiso Kweyama; a double bill with Dada Masilo who is working with dancers from Israel and Luyanda Sidiya and Andile Sodiya presenting a new work called Stadium which he created on Ikapa dance Company from Cape Town.
Also included in the programme is a Butoh work called Suikerbos by Frauke.
The Dance Umbrella 2010 will host a series of Master Classes facilitated by both local and international teachers; Face- to-face interviews with selected choreographers and other workshops still to be confirmed.
